Christmas In Other Lands: Pan de Pascua

I am happy to participate in MKB Christmas in Different Lands this year. The main topic this year is a favorite Christmas recipe. 

Chile has several food traditions around the Holidays and all of them are yummy. My favorite one is Pan de Pascua. 

People in Chile celebrate Christmas eve (Nochebuena) on December 24th and Christmas day (Navidad) on December 25th. Children open the presents on Christmas Day, a few minutes after 12am. People greet each other saying  Feliz Navidad or Feliz Pascua for Merry Christmas. Although Pascua means Easter, people use this word during Easter and Christmas time. I know, it is different. In any event, we have Pan de Pascua for Navidad. Just to give you an idea, Pan de Pascua is similar to Panettone or Fruit Cake. 

I can't take all the credits for this post since the recipe is not mine, the last time I made Pan de Pascua I took the recipe from En Mi Cocina Hoy, which is a bilingual blog about Chilean food. 

I loved the way they tasted and I made enough to give them as  present for my dear friends and neighbors.

El milagro de la primera flor de Nochebuena

We all see beautiful poinsettias all over during Christmas time, but not everyone knows where this tradition comes from. This is why I wanted to introduce the book El Milagro de la primera flor de Nochebuena to my class. 

During our reading comprehension block, my students have been learning about Literary Elements, such as, characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle and end. This book was perfect to review these elements, and also to introduce Christmas tradition's season. 

In addition to Literary Elements, we also reviewed some basic parts of a book, such as, cover, back, tittle, author and illustrator. We still need to work on nonfiction books!

Middle - Parte media/desarrollo

As a closing activity, my class was able to create their own Poinsettias. I took the pattern from this website, if you are interested. I just used red and green construction paper to create the flowers and a few yellow squares in the middle.

Como Adviento comenzó oficialmente hoy, quise hacer una Corona de Adviento para compartir con todos. En esta corona se pueden practicar las oraciones más necesarias, colorear, recortar y pegar para hacerla tridimensional. Pero lo  más divertido es que se pueden agregar las lucecitas para hacerla brillar en la noche.  Puedes encontrar las luces en cualquier parte y lo mejor es que son baratas. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The feast of our Lady of Guadalupe

Advent started a few Sundays ago and my class and I have talked about many Christian symbols and Feasts during this important time of the year. On December 12th of each year we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and because of it, we read the book "Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe" by Tomie de Paola. Did you notice who translated it into Spanish? 

My students enjoyed the story of Juan Diego, his tilma or cloak and learned about the relation between roses and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The story was also meaningful  for them because of their Hispanic background and the connections they made with their own lives, which is also part of developing reading comprehension skills. 

After reading the story, my students worked on a craftivity to create their own tilma and this is what they did:

KevinKarlayLaBanda: Spanish Covers of English Songs

Kevin Karla y la Banda is a Chilean band mostly popular for their Spanish covers, such as Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, One Direction, Katie Perry, etc. They have captured the attention of many followers and currently have 1,000,000 subscribers in their channel in Youtube.  

They are not only talented, but also creative when it comes to put the lyrics together. I use their songs to teach more vocabulary to my students and, of course, to have fun. I love the idea of playing their music videos during those "indoor recess days", or when we are cleaning our classroom.

The best part of these covers is that most of the videos include the lyrics right there on the screen to make it easy the sing along/karaoke.And the fact that the songs are familiar to my students, it makes them even more meaningful for them to learn them in Spanish.

Día de Todos los Santos y Día de los Fieles Difuntos

No sólo recordamos a nuestros queridos difuntos (o "finados" en jerga popular) entre el 31 de octubre y el 2 de noviembre. En la mayoría de los países hispanohablantes, la religión predominante es mas bien cristiana, y por lo mismo,  también se veneran a Todos los Santos de la religión católica.   Por ésta razón, hice un producto relacionado con algunos de los santos más populares que puedes encontrar en mi tienda TPT.

Vísperas de Todos los Santos

Se celebra la noche del 31 de octubre y viene de la expresión "All hallows" que significa víspera de todos los santos. 

Festividad de Todos los Santos

Tradición católica en honor de Todos los Santos. Se celebra el 1 de noviembre.  

Festividad de los Fieles Difuntos

Se celebra todos los segundos días de noviembre (2 de noviembre). Se recuerdan a quienes ya no están entre nosotros.

Santos que hicieron historia

Halloween no significa nada en sí, sino que es más bien una contracción de "All Hallows Eve" en inglés, que quiere decir "Víspera de Todos los Santos". 

Para celebrar este día, he recopilado algunas series y películas de algunos de mis santos favoritos. Las películas están dirigidas para la familia y siempre con la supervisión y guía de los adultos, ¡qué disfruten! 

Padre Hurtado

El padre Alberto Hurtado fue el primer sacerdote chileno quien se hizo conocido por la compasión que sintió por los niños pobres de Chile en la década del 40.  Su labor fue tan importante que hasta hoy en día existe El Hogar de Cristo, organización que esta dedicada a la ayuda y apoyo de los chilenos más necesitados. Su santuario se encuentra en Santiago, Chile. 

El Padre Pio

El Padre Pío fue un fraile capuchino, conocido por sus estigmas, bilocación y muchos testimonios de milagros. Esta es una de mis películas preferidas, no tan solo por la calidad de la película, sino que también por la cercanía a la vida real del Padre Pío.  

Para aprender más de los santos, tengo estos títeres de mi tienda TPT para usar en la casa o en la escuela. 

Papa Juan Pablo II

Esta es mi próxima película para disfrutar en casa el Día de Todos los Santos. Todos sabemos que Juan Pablo II fue un papa que dejo un vacío muy grande con su partida, no tan solo por su pontificado, si no que también por su vida ejemplar. 

Santa Teresa de Los Andes

Santa Teresa de los Andes fue una carmelita descalza  y la primera  Santa chilena. Murió a los 20 años, y por eso se le llama la Santa de los jóvenes. Su santuario esta ubicado  en la ciudad de Los Andes, Chile. Esta película muestra su vida antes de entrar al convento hasta el final de sus días. Su vida es un ejemplo de santidad. 

Podría agregar más santos a esta lista, pero no terminaría nunca. Cada santo tiene una historia y vida relevante. Recientemente se han agregado siete santos más a la iglesia católica, el Papa Paul VI, Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez y la primera santa boliviana Nazaria Ignacia de Santa Teresa de Jesús March Mesa, entre otros. PLOP

Con la intención de que mis estudiantes practicaran  gramática y habla todos los días, me vino a la mente la palabra ¡PLOP! muy característica de Sudamérica y Chile principalmente. 

La palabra PLOP viene de un cómic o historieta chilena llamada "Condorito", que ha sido más bien para adultos, pero ahora también hay ediciones para niños. 

La palabra PLOP se puede usar para llenar esos espacios entre expresiones de admiración o desconcierto. Por ejemplo: 

Así es que usando esta palabra divertida, pensé en todas aquellas palabras o expresiones que mis estudiantes tienen dificultad al usar, y las copié en palitos de madera anchos. Luego escribí la palabra PLOP en cuatro palitos diferentes y puse todos los palitos en un vaso grande.  

El juego se puede jugar con 5 o más personas dependiendo de la cantidad de palitos disponibles. Consiste en que el primer jugador saca un palito, lo lee en voz alta, completa la oración y se queda el palito. Y así sucesivamente con los demás jugadores/palitos. Por ejemplo:

Yo hice... (en vez de hicí)...mi tarea. 

Yo traje... (en vez de trají)... mi libro favorito.

Mi _____ me ama porque...(en vez de mi mamá ama a yo) 

Cuando uno de los jugadores saca el palito PLOP, entonces TODOS los palitos deben ser devueltos al vaso y el juego termina o comienza nuevamente. 

Children's Music from Chile

I want to feature one of my favorite childhood bands, and for this  I have chosen a few videos from a Chilean children's music group. The name of the band is Mazapán. They have been playing since 1980. Oh! so many memories come to my mind!

The songs are contagious and full of creativity. The language is very clear for Spanish learners and the lyrics have a rich vocabulary. The target audience are children of all ages and you can use them to teach Spanish,  initial/ending sounds, expand vocabulary or teach poetry.

In their  website  you can find more information about them and of course songs and  videos.  They are an amazing group of experienced musicians, and although I have listened to their songs hundreds of times, I can't get tired of them.

I have added the a few videos and lyrics of their most popular songs. In almost every song, the paragraphs are rhyming  or repeating, which makes it perfect to learn the language.

Mes de la Herencia Hispana: Recursos para la escuela

Ya está terminando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, y para celebrar, he recopilado algunos videos desde PBS.  Los videos forman parte de un programa especial llamado "Passport to Latin America". Esta vez escogí Chile, Colombia y Centro América, pues son países significativos para mis estudiantes por diferentes razones. Ustedes pueden ver los países restantes visitando este sitio.

Pueblos Originarios: Los Mapuches

Unos de los pueblos originarios del sur del continente americano son Los Mapuches, los cuales tienen muchas tradiciones, ya sea en vestimenta, comida, ceremonias u organización social que han perdurado con el tiempo. Para comprender y aprender más fácilmente de este pueblo, he compilado 10 hechos importantes.

1. Tiene su propia lengua llamada mapudungun. Tradicionalmente, es hablada, escasamente se ve en escritos. Actualmente, se sigue hablando en casi todas las comunidades rurales que subsisten al sur chileno y argentino.

2. Los araucanos suelen trabajar en equipo, en grupos, en comunidad. Esto les permite mantener fuertes lazos familiares.Esta forma de trabajo se denomina “mingaco” e insta a este pueblo a trabajar en conjunto en las tierras durante periodos de cosechas para el desarrollo de la agricultura artesanal.

3. Este tipo de edificación recibe el hombre de “ruca” (del mapudungun ruka, ‘casa’) y es la más importante dentro de la arquitectura de esta etnia.

4.poseen instrumentos como la “trutruca” y el “kultrun”. Estos instrumentos son usados en ceremonias y rituales que aluden a su música tradicional, bailes cantos y deportes tradicionales, como el “palín”.

5. El palín se refiere al llamado “juego de la chueca”. Es una actividad típica de este pueblo que tiene fines religiosos o deportivos.

6. Hay un condimento picante típico de los araucanos: el “merkén”. Se trata de un aliño de ají seco ahumado que contiene otros ingredientes. Tiene aspecto de polvo rojo con escamas de diferentes tonalidades. Se parece a la pimienta roja o al “chile” de árbol mexicano.

7. El pueblo mapuche es un pueblo de origen guerrero. Está organizado con una estructura social liderada por un jefe guerrero.

Se trata del “lonko”, o cacique. Este término apunta al cabecilla o jefe de una extensa familia o comunidad mapuche.

8. En tiempos de guerra, cuando se enfrentaron a los españoles, se reunían todos los loncos para elegir un “toqui”; que es el título que daban a los líderes militares. Generalmente, eran personas mayores que tenía experiencia en batallas y tradiciones mapuches.

9. La “machi” es la persona religiosa, médica, consejera y protectora de los araucanos. Es la mujer que se comunica con los dioses de la vida. Por su parte, la “kalku” es quien conoce las deidades de la muerte.

La machi es quien realiza “machitún”. Este es un ritual ceremonial en el que se invoca a los antepasados mapuches que viven en el mundo espiritual y predicen males y enfermedades. Por lo general, se realiza en el interior de la ruca del enfermo junto a sus seres queridos.

10. Como la mujer era una importante figura en la actividad económica de la tribu, cuando una de ellas llegaba a casarse, el padre debía ser recompensado por la pérdida. Así, el precio se arreglaba entre el novio y su futuro suegro, después de lo cual los parientes del novio raptaban a la novia, simulaban un combate y finalmente todo acababa en una gran fiesta.
