The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The feast of our Lady of Guadalupe

Advent started a few Sundays ago and my class and I have talked about many Christian symbols and Feasts during this important time of the year. On December 12th of each year we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and because of it, we read the book "Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe" by Tomie de Paola. Did you notice who translated it into Spanish? 

My students enjoyed the story of Juan Diego, his tilma or cloak and learned about the relation between roses and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The story was also meaningful  for them because of their Hispanic background and the connections they made with their own lives, which is also part of developing reading comprehension skills. 

After reading the story, my students worked on a craftivity to create their own tilma and this is what they did:
